Sheryl Crow has been on a tour around the USA to raise awareness of the environment. Alas, she is very much part of the negative environmentalism school, wanting us to descend into a simpler, more basic existence, with an emphasis on banning things. According to BBC News:
Singer Sheryl Crow has said a ban on using too much toilet paper should be introduced to help the environment.
Crow has suggested using “only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where two to three could be required”.
Oh dear.
She would benefit from reading the report Positive Environmentalism (which I co-authored with Tom Clougherty and others). It says that policymakers need to adopt “positive environmentalism”. This view recognises the importance of dealing with environmental problems but rejects the doom and gloom approach so commonly encountered. It sees the great environmental achievements over the past century and rejects the notion that there are long term limits to economic prosperity. It sees the importance of technology, innovation and economic growth in tackling climate change - but not bans on toilet paper.
